Who Can Become a Private Detective?

The primary requirement for becoming a detective is holding a proper license. This license allows individuals to perform their duties legally and reliably and to handle cases entrusted by clients. The title of “detective” is also legally reserved solely for individuals with this license.

Who Can Obtain a License?

Obtaining a private detective license is quite a challenge, as it requires meeting a range of specific criteria:

    • The applicant must be at least 21 years old.
    • Have a minimum of secondary education.
    • Hold Polish citizenship or citizenship of a European Union or EFTA member state (fluency in Polish is required).
    • Possess a certificate of no criminal record.
    • Have a medical certificate attesting to mental and physical fitness for the profession.
    • Have full legal capacity.
    • Must not have been dismissed from service in the Police, Internal Security Agency, Foreign Intelligence Agency, Border Guard, Government Protection Bureau, court, army, prosecutor’s office, or other public administration bodies in Poland or any other country within the last five years.
    • Obtain an impeccable character reference issued by the district (county or city) police chief responsible for the area of residence.
    • Possess documentation confirming training in personal data protection, classified information protection, regulations defining the rights and responsibilities of a detective, as well as business regulations for providing detective services.

If a person meets these requirements, they must submit an application with the necessary documentation to the Department of Administrative Proceedings at the Provincial Police Headquarters for their respective voivodeship to obtain a private detective license.
