Kidnapping and Missing Person Searches

The disappearance of a loved one brings immense sorrow and a sense of helplessness. However, it is essential not to give up from the outset. In missing person cases, the initial days following the disappearance are crucial, as they provide the best opportunity to gather information about the circumstances and identify potential motives. A detective bureau can begin these efforts immediately upon receiving a client’s report. Prompt action significantly increases the chances of a successful search.

Categories of Missing Persons

The actions taken by the police and detective agencies in searching for missing persons depend on the circumstances surrounding the disappearance. Based on Order No. 124 of the Chief of Police, which governs the search for missing persons and outlines procedures for cases involving unidentified individuals or unknown human remains, missing persons are categorized into the following three types:

    • Category I Missing Person – An individual who has suddenly left their last known place of residence under circumstances that raise suspicion of an offense against their life, health, or freedom, or that indicate a potential threat to their life, health, or freedom.
    • Category II Missing Person – An individual who has left their last place of residence under circumstances that do not justify an immediate need to protect their life, health, or freedom.
    • Category III Missing Person – This includes minors who have willfully run away following a previous escape from home or a care center, minors missing due to “parental kidnapping,” and adults who have left a place where they were forcibly placed (e.g., psychiatric hospital, social welfare home, etc.).

What Actions Should Be Taken After a Disappearance?

Immediate action is essential. As soon as you become aware of a disappearance, report it to the police and contact a detective agency or a professional foundation that specializes in supporting missing person searches. Next, search the immediate area around the missing person’s residence and check nearby hospitals, shelters, or social welfare centers. Important information can also be gathered from individuals regularly in contact with the missing person, so reaching out to family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors is beneficial. Valuable clues regarding the missing person’s whereabouts might also be found by examining their personal belongings.

If these steps do not yield the necessary details, assistance from the public can be invaluable. Posting flyers and placing announcements in the media will help reach a wider audience who may have witnessed something or know the missing person’s location. Although these are steps that can be taken independently, working with professionals is often the most effective way to address such a complex situation.

Often, the loved ones of a missing person act under the influence of emotion, which can hinder rational thinking and analysis of the situation. Due to inexperience and lack of access to critical information, independent actions may ultimately prove ineffective. For this reason, we assure you that a detective agency is the right organization to increase the chances of locating the missing person. We can help you too!
